Netflix Analysis

(SQL, Power BI, PPT)

Introduction

Netflix operates the over-the-top subscription video on-demand service, which includes original films and television series commissioned or acquired by the company, and third-party content licensed from other distributors. This project was born out of my curiosity to answers some lingering question which includes but not limited to:

  • Determining the top genre of shows Netflix releases

  • To determine what year Netflix added the most content

  • Understanding the top demographics where Netflix movies are predominantly produced

  • Determining what type of shows Netflix focuses on mostly

Key Insights and Findings

  • Most Popular Release Year: The peak year for movie releases was 2018 with 1,146 titles, indicating a high content production period.

  • Percentage by Type: Movies dominate the content at 70%, compared to TV shows at 30%.

  • Top Movie Genres: Dramas (1.6k) and Comedies (1.2k) are the most popular genres, followed by Action & Adventure, Documentaries, and Children & Family.

  • Content by Year Added: The most content was added in 2019 (2,016), followed by 2018 (1,879), but a decline is seen in 2020 and 2021.

  • Most Movies by Country: The United States has the highest concentration of movies, followed by India and the United Kingdom.

  • Longest Movie Title: The movie Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond holds the longest title with 104 characters.

Recommendations

  • Leverage Popular Genres: Increase focus on producing or acquiring more Dramas and Comedies, as they are top-performing genres.

  • Monitor Content Trends: The sharp decline in content added after 2019 suggests a need to understand potential factors, such as production challenges or shifts in strategy, and adapt accordingly.

  • Diversify Content by Type: With 70% movies, consider boosting TV show content to create a balanced portfolio and appeal to diverse audience preferences.

  • Global Reach: Continue capitalizing on content from the United States, but also explore more from emerging markets like India, which shows a significant presence in the global content landscape.
